Upgrading pre installed Ubuntu on dell

For some strange reason the upgrade option is set off by default for Ubuntu which comes installed default in Dell has its upgrade option disabled. But for the open system that Linux is, you can easily work around that by following the below steps.

1.Open up a terminal and type

sudo apt-get install update-manager-core

2.Next run this command

sudo vi /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Change the line

Prompt=never

to

Prompt=lts

or

Prompt=normal

lts – will only upgrade to long term support version realases

normal – will upgrade to the intermediate relases

3. Update the packages before upgrading

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

4. Finally type upgrade command and accept with “Y” at the prompt

sudo do-release-upgrade
